Sponge Squeezing Place a bucket of water on the work area. You will need a bowl (with an indicated fill line using either a permanent marker or tape) and sponges for this activity. Invite the child to feel the dry sponge. Demonstrate submerging the sponge in the water and squeezing the sponge into the bowl. Allow the child to place the sponge in the bucket and feel the water. Lift the wet sponge carefully and hold it over the bowl. Allow the child to feel the wet sponge and squeeze the water into the bowl. Continue until the fill line is reached. Repeat activity as long as desired. Pour the water back into the bucket. Use the sponge to clean up any water on the work area and squeeze back into the bucket. Carry the bucket to the sink and empty it. Replace materials back on the shelf. The goal of this activity is to develop coordination, to strengthen hands and fingers, to learn how a sponge works, and to prepare for writing.
